Meet Alexi
Alexi Butts, a Los Angeles-based ceramic artist, uses her sculptures to delve into expressions of gender, with a particular focus on the female experience. Her work also reflects her unique perspective as a Third Culture Kid. Born and raised in Hong Kong, her artwork is a response to the instability of moving continents as an adolescent, Butts’ art practice is rooted in intentional and methodical planning that evolves into more organic projects.
In 2019, Butts was an artist in residence at A.I.R Vallauris where she began and exhibited her project “Langue, Mémoire, Lieu.” Butts has also participated in several collaborative exhibitions including Nicole Seisler’s "Preparing" at Craft Contemporary, as well as Andrew Young’s project “CA: Found Among the Leaves; a Bibliophytology” at the LA Arboretum. Her work has been featured in several print publications including “Careless Magazine,” “Inkblot: Literary Magazine,” and as the cover art of “Scripps College Journal.” She connects with the wider art community by serving as the digital media manager for Pasadena Photography Arts.
Butts is a 2020 graduate of Scripps College where she double majored in French and Studio Art with a concentration in ceramics.
